Community Music

Joining our voices together and singing our stories.

Taste your story.

In my role as a Community Creative Fellow, I’m working to write and record an album surrounding the themes of fragmentation and memory. In doing so, I’m trying to capture the way the senses help us access memory and fill in the cracks of our broken histories. One song, in particular, will focus on food and the ways taste and smell can connect us to our loved ones and our ancestry.

Add your voice.

Is there a particular dish that brings you closer to loved ones?

What did it smell like? Who used to make it for you?

Is there a family dish that you’re struggling to recreate?

What is it about that dish that you're struggling to capture?

If your ancestors were here, what cooking advice would they give you?

Might they be proud, amused, or perhaps frustrated to see what you are doing?

If any of these questions resonated with you, I would love to include your voice in my song! You can use your smartphone to create a short audio recording of you or a loved one answering the questions above, and then send in the files using one of the links below. I will then incorporate bits of your audio into my song, stitching your voices together into an abstract soundscape rich with your stories. I hope you’ll join me!

Submission Deadline: Friday, June 4th

Guidelines:

Audio recordings can be any length up to 2 or 3 minutes or so. I will be pulling out the words and phrases that best capture your memories. Any audio file format is fine (mp3, wav, aiff). I can also extract audio from video submissions, but audio is preferred.

How do I record audio?

Most smartphones have a “voice memo” or “voice recorder” app that comes pre-installed. Open the app, press record, and hold the phone within a few feet from the sound source. When you’re done, you can send it directly through the app to my email address, battatmusic@gmail.com. (Just make sure to fill out the form above too!)

If you can’t figure it out, you can also submit videos, and I will extract the audio. Good luck!
